TITLE: Reference/Faculty Services Librarian

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide liaison services to faculty members by assisting them with reference and research needs including developing on-line support and working with their research assistants. Provide reference services to other library user groups: law students, University community, legal community and general public. Participates in collection development and assists with formal and informal instruction of legal bibliography and research programs implemented by the Law Library by preparing or contributing to bibliographies, research guides and design of web pages.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years or more of professional law library experience preferred, minimum of two years required. JD from an accredited ABA-approved law school and ALA-accredited MLS required. Demonstrated knowledge of traditional legal research methods and legal reference work. Knowledge of all forms of information technology used in legal research and law school instruction. Strong leadership and communication skills. Must be service oriented and have ability to work independently as well as with others in a team environment.

SALARY:

Low to mid 60's.

Systems Librarian - University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law - Washington, DC

The University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law is recruiting a librarian who, under the direction of the Associate Director for Public Services, will be responsible for  evaluation, coordination, and promotion of the library's electronic resources, including databases, journals, books, and reference sources; design and development of the library's online presence, including coordination of content on an electronic resources web page;  development and implementation of online legal research instruction, including training tailored for faculty, students, and librarians; identification and monitoring of new and emerging technologies and trends of interest to the library, including recommendations for the purchase of electronic resources; and vendor relations, including scheduling and coordinating online training with account representatives.

This is a newly-titled position – Systems Librarian -- created as part of reorganization of our professional staff. The Systems Librarian works as part of the public services department team to deliver excellent research and references services and participate on the faculty liaison team, the collection development committee, and in the regular reference rotation.

Requirements are a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and M.L.I.S. or equivalent from an ALA-accredited library school. Experience with current information technologies, including web authoring tools, and experience in legal research and legal research instruction are strongly desired.  Strong written and oral communications skills and ability to work as part of a team are essential.

Reference - Charlotte School of Law - Charlotte, NC

The Charlotte School of Law, a provisionally accredited ABA school, seeks a creative, skilled, and service-oriented colleague for the position of Reference Librarian. This position focuses on providing both print and electronic resource services; especially Law 2.0 resources. Library maintains a collection of over 110,000 physical volumes and volume equivalents in print, electronic, and multimedia and micro-formats. The Library supports the teaching, research, and service activities of CSL, a growing school of nearly 500 students and nearly 40 faculty. A key component of this position will be to engage as an active partner with faculty and students in improving access to digital and scholarly resources.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The incumbent will p rovide reference service to law students, faculty, and the legal community (includes evening and weekend hours), consult with a variety of library patrons to meet their legal research needs, prepare print and electronic research guides and bibliographies, and occasionally teach basic and advanced legal research through guest lectures and workshops. In addition, the incumbent will engage in strategic planning for reference and public services, and assists the Associate Dean for Library and Information Services in implementing a unified vision of print and electronic materials. This position will be heavily involved in supporting and improving the Library's active faculty liaison program ; and collaborate with all library staff to develop, document, and administer policies, workflows, and procedures as well as support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment in a relatively new library.

Qualifications:

Required : ALA-accredited MLIS; J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.

Preferred:

At least two years of professional experience in a law or academic library; experience teaching legal research; knowledge of trends and practices in research involving the use of electronic resources; familiarity with federated searching, strong customer service focus; demonstrated initiative, organizational skills, and problem-solving abilities; strong communication and interpersonal skills, evidenced by the ability to improve the work of a team and maintain positive relationships with staff, faculty, and students; ability to train and motivate staff; project management experience; and/or knowledge of legal materials and legal education; and a commitment to engage in continuing professional development.

This position presently reports directly to the Associate Dean for Library and Information Services.

Associate Dean for Legal Information Resources - University of Florida - Gainesville, FL

The University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law seeks applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Legal Information Resources.  The primary responsibility of the position is to lead the Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center (LIC), a premier institution housing one of the largest collections of legal research materials in the southeastern United States.

The University of Florida is a major, public, land-grant, research university.  It is the state of Florida's oldest and most comprehensive university, and it is one of the most academically diverse public universities in the nation. It has a long history of established programs in international education, research and service. It is one of only 17 public, land-grant universities that belong to the Association of American Universities .  Located in Gainesville, Florida, the University is a 90-minute drive from Jacksonville, and less than two hours from Orlando, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The LIC serves faculty, staff, and students at the Levin College of Law, other University of Florida students and faculty, as well as the Florida Bar and the general public.  The library's principal user population includes approximately 60 tenure-track faculty and 40 other full-time faculty members, and approximately 1,100 J.D. and LL.M. students.  One of the library's greatest strengths is the well developed tax collection which supports the College's top-ranked tax LL.M. program.  The library's staff includes nine tenure-track librarians and twelve paraprofessionals.  The operating budget is $1,421,000, and the acquisitions budget is $1,278,000.   The collection contains 643,000 volume equivalents and most of the standard electronic resources common to top-tier academic law libraries.  Approximately 26% of the acquisitions budget is devoted to electronic resources.

The LIC works closely with the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries. Law librarians participate actively in campus-wide library and information science activities. The relationship with the Smathers Libraries has led to successful digitization projects, development of a campus-wide book retrieval system for law faculty, and improved coordination of collection development..  Law librarians participate in shared governance within the University of Florida and also represent the LIC on state-wide committees of the Council of State University Libraries.

The Associate Dean should hold J.D. and M.L.S. degrees, or their equivalents, from accredited institutions and should have successful administrative experience in all aspects of library operations, including budgeting, collection management, training, strategic planning, and preservation of print and digital information.  S/he should be an experienced teacher, capable of developing and directing professional librarians who have increasing responsibilities in the teaching of legal research to law and pre-law students both in person and through distance learning.  S/he will be expected to work with library faculty and staff and the law school faculty to develop a shared vision for responding to changes in legal publishing, legal research and information retrieval, the legal profession, and the academy.

This Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean of the College of Law.   The Associate Dean is a member of the College's senior management team and is expected to be familiar with the challenges of public higher education and the changing professional, curricular, and technological needs of the law faculty and students served by the library.  The Associate Dean is also involved in activities representing the College across the University, including serving on the University's IT Advisory Committee for Academic Technology (ITAC-AT) which deals with course management systems, distance education, classroom technology, web standards and management, and emerging technologies.

The Coleman Karesh Law Library at the University of South Carolina School of Law seeks a dynamic leader to be Head of Technical Services. The successful candidate will supervise the operations of the Technical Services Department including ordering, payment for and receipt of library materials in all formats, planning and assessment of the department's work, workflow efficiency, fiscal responsibility, binding of library materials, shelf reading, technology, and personnel development. Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills, and must possess ability to follow and give clear instructions.

This is a 12 month, full-time, tenure track appointment. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Reference Librarian - University of Kentucky School of Law - Lexington, KY

Responsibilities: As a member of the reference staff, this position will provide proactive reference and research support to the college of law faculty, students, members of the practicing bar and other patrons of the Alvin E. Evans Law Library. Reference service includes participation in the Library's faculty liaison program, compilation of traditional and web-based bibliographies, user guides, and the provision of bibliographic instruction. This position also requires reference desk hours, including participation in the evening and weekend rotations when in effect. Reference librarians also provide Lexis, Westlaw and other electronic resource instruction. 

Reference librarians at the UK Law Library also play an integral part in the first year legal research and writing curriculum. In addition to providing the service noted above as part of supporting this program, reference librarians are expected to participate actively as instructors for the Introduction to Legal Research course on an overload basis.

Qualifications:   A J.D. degree from an ABA approved law school and an M.L.S. from an ALA accredited institution are required. Also required: a familiarity with legal materials, including law and law related on-line databases; a familiarity with software customarily used in academic libraries and standard productivity software suites; strong service orientation; the ability to work effectively as a member of the library team; and, excellent oral and written communication skills. Previous law library reference experience is preferred.

Position Overview:
The acquisitions staff of the Fourth Circuit Headquarters Library is responsible for law book acquisitions for all federal court libraries and judicial offices throughout the five states of the Fourth Circuit using the SirsiDynix integrated library system to prepare purchase orders and interface with the FAS4T financial system. The Acquisitions Librarian is responsible for acquisition functions and also acts as the Systems Librarian for the integrated library system (ILS).

Representative Duties:
• Prepare law book purchase orders in SirsiDynix for new titles and for renewals of existing subscriptions in all formats for approximately 300 consignees throughout the Circuit and maintain these inventories.
• Perform pre-order searching and downloading of appropriate records from OCLC.
• Manage and obligate funds from law book budget allotments pursuant to judiciary regulations and federal statutes.
• Implement the serials module of the ILS and assist with serials check-in and materials processing.
• Maintain the ILS and provide ongoing technical support and trouble-shooting for the system.
• Participate in the beta testing of new versions of the ILS and provide training in the use of the system.
• Communicate with judges, vendors, and court personnel regarding law book subscriptions.
• Assist with the Excess Law Book Program in the relocation or disposal of law books throughout the Circuit, which could involve travel to other/out-of-state locations and lifting boxes of books weighing up to 40 lbs.

Required Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited institution with at least one year of acquisitions experience.
• Familiarity with integrated library acquisitions and experience with OCLC.
• Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office suite software.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills and ability to meet deadlines.

Associate Director for Public Services - The Georgia State University College of Law - Atlanta, GA

The Georgia State University College of Law Library is seeking an experienced librarian to lead its Public Services Department. Situated in the heart of downtown Atlanta only one block from the state capital, the College of Law opened in 1982 and has since risen to become one of the country's top 75 law schools according to U.S. News & World Report. Responsibilities:

The Associate Director for Public Services develops and assists the Law Library Director with planning goals, objectives, and policies for the public services department of the law library. He or she supervises the Reference/Student Services Librarian, the Reference/Faculty Services Librarian, and two Administrative Supervisors (Circulation Supervisor and Stack Maintenance Supervisor). This includes hiring, evaluating, and providing direct feedback to all librarians and administrative staff, and indirect feedback to other staff, students, and work-study employees in the Public Services department. The Associate Director for Public Services helps to perform the duties of the above-mentioned employees during contingencies or emergencies, and assists the Director with collection development.

The Associate Director for Public Services has significant teaching responsibilities. He or she teaches the required first year Legal Bibliography course annually and may teach the upper level Advanced Legal Research Course as needed. The Associate Director for Public Services also oversees all in-class instruction by invitation of the faculty.

The Associate Director for Public Services supervises and participates in all faculty services programs by overseeing and providing research, instruction, document delivery, and other services to professors and their research assistants. He or she monitors work flows in faculty services, provides similar services to law school affiliated centers and clinics on the campus, and serves as the library liaison to the law school's interdisciplinary centers.

The Associate Director for Public Services participates in the reference duty rotation approximately 12 hours per week during day and evening hours and supervises all reference librarians. Reference librarians at Georgia State University College of Law provide reference services to the entire Georgia State University Community, the local bench and bar, and pro se patrons.

The Associate Director for Public Services assumes the duties of the Law Library director in her absence.

The Reference/Student Services Librarian is responsible for teaching one section of a ten week, one credit legal bibliography course each fall semester. In addition, he or she coordinates the provision of targeted classroom research instructional sessions for law faculty, including teaching these sessions as needed. He or she also coordinates the development of library research guides using LibGuides and collaborates with other librarians on development and maintenance of the library website.

Description of the Library Unit
The NCCU School of Law was founded in 1939 to provide an opportunity for legal education to African Americans. The School of Law now provides this opportunity to a more diverse student body than any other in the nation, as it pertains to race and gender. This environment of diversity better prepares our students to effect positive change in the broader society. The student body consists of more than 600 students and 38 faculty members. 

The Law Library serves the law school faculty and students as their basic library and study resource for teaching and research. Heavy use of the Law Library is made by community people and members of the bench and bar. The NCCU School of Law Library's more than 360,000 volumes and volume equivalents are offered in a variety of formats providing the legal resources needed to meet the pedagogical, research and scholarship requirements of the Law School's students and faculty. The Library is a selective North Carolina and United States Government Depository, has a special collection in Civil Rights Law and supports the J.D./M.L.S. and J.D./M.B. A. dual degree programs on campus. 

Position Duties :
The Reference/Electronic Resources Librarian is responsible for the management of the library's electronic resources.  Duties include:  Identifying, evaluating, and recommending the purchase of  Web-based and electronic resources; renewing and evaluating licensing agreements for purchased resources; arranging vendor and librarian-taught training sessions for law students and faculty and working with student associates hired by vendors; promoting and providing instruction in the use of electronic materials for faculty, staff, and students; developing new services and programs that expose the library's electronic resources to patrons; working closely with the technical services staff and the law school webmaster to maintain access to library resources via the library's web page; and serving on the Law School Web Team.

The Reference/Electronic Resources Librarian is also a member of the reference team who works with other reference librarians to provide extensive reference and research assistance to patrons including providing liaison services to an assigned group of faculty members; preparing research bibliographies, user guides and other research aids; participating in the selection of information resources; providing reference and research assistance to faculty, students, staff, the local bar and the public; developing and marketing library services to faculty and students.

The Reference/Electronic Resources Librarian teaches in the first year legal research and persuasion courses and performs other duties as assigned.

Required: JD from an ABA approved law school and an MLS from and ALA accredited institution.  A minimum of two years experience in an academic, court or law firm library and a demonstrated record of providing sophisticated research assistance to faculty or attorneys are preferred but entry level candidates with equivalent experience will be considered. Candidates must also have excellent written and oral communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and a familiarity with and understanding of legal research materials in all formats. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, able to meet deadlines and work well in a collaborative environment to achieve common goals. S/he will be able to develop productive working relationships and work effectively as a team member as well as independently.  Some teaching/training experience is required.

JOB SUMMARY: The Student Services Reference Librarian will lead the Legal Information Center's (LIC's) outreach efforts and support services to students at the Levin College of Law. The role includes leading and enhancing the outreach and marketing of services to students, improving communication with students, and researching student needs and wants in order to develop new services and programs to better serve and support legal education both in and out of the classroom. This is an entry-level, tenure-track position with tenure in the University Libraries.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead the LIC's participation in the College of Law's orientation events for entering J.D. students.

Act as a liaison to student organizations and coordinate liaison efforts to co-curricular organizations (e.g., journals, moot court, and trial team).

Coordinate the LIC's efforts to improve promotion of LIC services and programs and overall communication with students. Avenues of communication and promotion may include the campus newsletter, library Twitter account and blog, library web site, and other means.

Coordinate efforts to assess student needs via focus groups, surveys, and unobtrusive means.

Teach one section of Advanced Legal Research per academic year.

Work with the Instructional Services Reference Librarian to support the first year Legal Research & Writing program by providing training to teaching assistants and by designing and delivering online tutorials and learning modules for teaching basic legal research skills.

Work with the Faculty Services Librarian to organize and digitize the College of Law archives.

Develop programming for the LIC (e.g., invited speakers, workshops for legal research training and technology skills, study breaks, etc.).

Serve as a member of the Reference team, e.g.:

o Work 10-12 hours per week staffing the Reference Desk (including one weekend or evening shift).

o Act as a librarian liaison to approximately 10 faculty members.

o Prepare or maintain research guides for library users.

Provide collection development support to one or more areas of the curriculum.

Contribute to the UF Libraries, the University, and the profession through substantive involvement in such activities as committee work, research, publishing, and active participation in professional organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required

J.D. and Master's degree in Library Science from accredited institutions.

Computer and telecommunication skills, including proficiency with web-based information tools. Skilled in the use of LexisNexis and Westlaw (including WebCourses and TWEN).

Familiarity with a wide variety of print and electronic legal resources.

Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to be a team player.

The Reference Librarian works under the general direction of the Head of Public Services.
