The firm is currently recruiting for a Reference Librarian for our New York office.  This position reports to the Head Librarian. 

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide library orientations & electronic services training for legal staff when necessary.
  • Assist Head Librarian with collection development and retention policies.
  • Acquire materials via ILL. and work closely with firm wide Library team and local Reference Assistant.
  • Provide general & in-depth reference services to legal staff utilizing manual and computerized literature using the Firm’s resources and outside sources in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct online research using printed materials, WESTLAW, LEXIS, LivEdgar, Elite, ChoicePoint, Accurint, Dun & Bradstreet, Dow Jones, Bloomberg and the Internet, CD-ROMs, and other information resources.
  • Orient new lawyers to Library services.
  • Work closely with Head Librarian and Practice Groups for selection and collection development processes.
  • Consult with Head Librarian concerning all library issues and work on special projects as assigned by Head Librarian.
  • Route telephone calls to the appropriate person.
  • Attend job related workshops and training sessions on site and participate in professional organization.
  • Provide and receive cross training in other library functions and provide backup support as needed.
  • Act as Library Liaison to assigned Practice Groups firm-wide, managing the group’s budget and advising the Practice Group Head regarding new and existing expenditures ie budgets.

Job & Educational Requirements:

Experience & Qualifications

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of legal online services, Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), internet searching, and experience with an automated cataloguing program are desirable.
  • Ability to keep up with new materials, changes in resources and techniques, and shifts in information demands; resourcefulness in obtaining needed materials and information.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills; willingness and ability to actively contribute to project teams as well as work alone.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time well.
  • Cheerful, friendly, and out-going demeanor; should be both creative and pragmatic; must display good judgment in decision-making and project management. Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with people within the organization and out.

Instructional Services Librarian (Job FA723Z)
George Mason University Law Library, Arlington, VA

Job Description:

General Features of the Position:

The George Mason University Law Library in Arlington, Virginia seeks a creative, energetic, and highly customer-oriented librarian with substantial teaching experience to coordinate legal research instruction in the required two-year Legal Research, Writing & Analysis (LRWA) course. As one of six professional librarians, the incumbent will also provide reference services and participate in the faculty liaison program. This position reports to the associate director of the law library.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the liaison between the writing department and the library. This will include working closely with the director and assistant director of the LRWA program, as well as participating in weekly meetings of the student teaching assistants.
  • Teach large lecture classes in legal research (approximately four to six days per semester), including some evening classes.
  • Coordinate the teaching of legal research classes and break-out sessions by librarian colleagues, which includes preparing presentations and assignments with the help of colleagues.
  • Create a final legal research exam for LRWA.
  • Promote research training opportunities for students, including individual training sessions such as “Prepare to Practice” or “Job Search Strategies.”
  • Participate in collection development activities.
  • Provide reference assistance to library patrons.
  • Serve as liaison to student journals, and provide legal research training in the Scholarly Writing class (required of all journal students).
  • Maintain professional growth by participating in educational programs and activities to ensure knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Participate in the work of university committees and regional and national associations.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Appointment and Benefits:

Strong service orientation, and the ability to interact positively with law faculty, students, colleagues, and public patrons.

Desired:

Three to five years reference or public services experience as a professional librarian, preferably in a law library.

Adjunct Reference Law Librarian—CUNY School of Law Library

Job Description:

We are currently seeking an Adjunct Reference Law Librarian for a position that will begin immediatley for 10 to 20 hours per week.  While hours are somewhat flexible, we anticipate that the individual will work Monday through Friday during normally scheduled reference hours between 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Primary responsibilities include reference desk service to the library community including law students, faculty and members of the general public. The individual hired for this position will also be instrumental in assisting with the Faculty Research Services Program.

Dependent upon funding, the position has the potential to last throughout the summer of 2010.

Job & Educational Requirements:

For appointment at the Instructor level, an M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program or a J.D. from an ABA accredited program is required. Appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor level will require an additional graduate degree (preferably a JD or MLS) or substantial progress towards completion of the second graduate degree.  Students who have completed their J.D. or M.L.S. and are working towards the second degree are encouraged to apply as well as applicants with law library experience.

The salary range for this position will be dependent upon experience and qualifications.
